Cricket South Africa, on Monday announced that Amol Muzumdar has been appointed as the interim batting coach for the Proteas for their 3-Test tour of India, starting next month.
You can be forgiven if you are not aware of Muzumdar’s record, but he had a successful First-Class career, scoring over 11,000 runs at a respectable average of 48.
After his playing days were over, he then moved onto coaching, as CSA said:
He has moved on to become one of the top coaches in India, holding high performance coaching certificates from the BCCI, Cricket Australia as well as in the UK through both Lancashire and Yorkshire
With South Africa’s record in the subcontinent cause for concern in recent times, with their drubbing to India in 2015 and then their whitewash at the hands of Sri Lanka in 2018, help was most definitely needed.
Muzumdar’s appointment is therefore an excellent decision as his experience of playing conditions in India will bring much needed knowledge and wisdom to the South African batsmen.
CSA Acting Director of Cricket, Corrie van Zyl said:
Amol is a perfect fit for us. He brings an intimate knowledge of Indian playing conditions and the challenges our batsmen are likely to face”
Muzumdar is also happy with his appointment and was quoted as saying:
Cricket has always been and will continue to be my calling. Having spent 25 years on the pitch as a player I intend to spend the next 25 tapping and grooming talent on the cricket field. I am very excited about this new chapter to my coaching career.
Having an experienced coach, with intimate local knowledge of Indian conditions is a terrific idea. I am now incredibly hopeful and positive that South Africa will have a successful tour of India.
The first Test starts on October 2nd.
